It is the newest coffee trend: Protein Cold Foam is gaining popularity as a new Coffeehouse -not. Cold foam is a sided version of whipped cream, with its sweet and creamy features, making it the ideal topping for a cold brew or ice coffee.

With blockbuster -coffee chains that now improve their cold foams with protein powder, this common ice coffee topping is given a power boost. But is protein cold foam actually good for you? And how can you bring a coffee shop to your house and make your own protein cold foam?

What’s so special about protein?

“Protein is important for everyone and not only people build muscle mass in the gym,” says MyfitnessPal Head of Nutrition Melissa Jaeger, RD, LD. This is why (2):

MyFitnessPal Registered dietitian Joanna GREGG says that the number is the minimum amount of proteins that your body must function every day – but it is not necessary the number you should strive for. You probably have to eat more proteins based on your goals and specific needs, she says.

“A good guideline is to strive for 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal and about 10 to 15 for snacks,” says Gregg. Homemade protein cold foam recipe

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or every milk you like)
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (whey or vegetable-based, ~ 15 g protein per scoop)
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • Snobe of sea salt
  • Ice cold cold brew or ice coffee, before serving
  • 1 tbsp of Greek yogurt (for thicker foam and a spicy twist)

Route description:

  1. Add milk, protein powder, vanilla extract, sweetener and salt to a blender, handheld or milk screen.
  2. Blend or foam for 30-60 seconds until it gets thick, creamy and airy.
  3. Fill a glass with ice coffee or cold brew.
  4. Top with the cold foam of vanilla.
  5. Stir or enjoy that classic Sweet-Foam-on-top experience as it is.
