A reader recently registered with a challenge that one lot confronted with people, even if they don’t always say it out loud:
“I want to get in shape, but I don’t know what goals to set. There is so much outside of it: Crossfit, Marathons, Calisthenics, Bodybuilding. It feels like I would like to do everything. And I’m afraid I disappoint myself if I choose something and fail.”
If that resonates with you, you are not the only one.
In a world full of fitness influencers, gym advertisements and shiny transformations, it is easy to lose sight of what You actually want.
So let’s zoom out and make this easier.
🧙oration 1. Try the genius question
Imagine that a genius grants you fitness wishes. But there is a catch: you wake up tomorrow without memory for the wish that is granted.
What is the first thing you notice? Paint a photo for me.
Maybe it is:
- You jump out of bed without pains or stiffness
- You feel more confidence in your clothes
- Fitness is a more natural part of your daily routine
- You have more energy for traveling, playing or daily life
This helps you to think about the result You want to get lost in the methods (such as crossfit or bodybuilding).
Because here is the truth:
There are depending on your goal a lot of Methods that lead to the same result. The best? It is the one with whom you enjoy enough to keep up.
🧠 2. Ask the 5 Whys
If you still feel foggy about your goals, try this:
Ask yourself:
“Why do I want to get in shape?”
Then, whatever your answer, ask Why again. (Repeat up to 5 times.)
By digging deeper, we can often find something that really resonates with us.
It can be “I want to get in great shape” to “I want to play with my grandchildren on the floor without pain.”
That is a good start, because it gives us more ideas about how we can get there.
For example, if you want to be able to play with your grandchildren on the floor without pain, you can start with:
- Introduction of a daily mobility and flexibility routine
- Practice balance in various fun ways
- Add a lower body strength training twice/week
All those will help you get in shape, but more importantly, helping you to get in shape in a way that connects with your deeper why.
⚠️ But … if the 5 why you emphasize? Skip it.
We have coached many people who get stuck here.
They think:
“My why is not deep enough.” “I would be more motivated if I just had the right why.”
But here is the thing:
You don’t need a perfect reason. You just have to start.
Yes, it’s handy to think. Yes, aligning your promotions with your values is great.
But you will learn much more About what is actually important to you doing Then you want by thinking about.
So if you feel stuck? Choose a general direction. Take a step. See what happens.
You can always start course later.
🧭 3. Correcting course is not failure
I think this is another really important part of setting goals:
It’s okay to change your goals as soon as you get started!
Sometimes it is enough to say:
“I think I want to feel better. I will start taking consistent action in that direction.”
As you continue, you get clarity. You will find out something is And not Important for you.
Because here is a small secret: most of our coaching customers change their goals at least once when they go.
That does not mean they failed. It means they have learned. And continued to move forward.
If you feel overwhelmed by all the fitness noise, you are not broken.
You are just ready to stop haunting someone else’s goal and to build your own.
And if you want help with that? I would like to hear where your head is.
Just press answer and let us pronounce it.
